I welcome inquiries from prospective students interested in research in biomechanics, motor learning, assistive device design and control. I am specifically recruiting PhD students to begin in Fall 2027 and Master's students year-round.
Students in the lab will contribute to a growing research program while developing as independent researchers and preparing for their future careers. Mentorship will include developing research questions, building technical, writing, and presentation skills, and learning how to carry a project forward with increasing independence.
Relevant backgrounds may include biomedical, mechanical, or robotics engineering; rehabilitation science; kinesiology; and computational neuroscience. Prior experience with hardware and control systems is especially relevant to device-focused work, while simulation and machine learning are assets for modeling-focused projects. Students should expect to develop skills in quantitative analysis, experimental research with human participants, and collaboration across disciplines. I look for students who are prepared to acquire the skills and methods their research requires, including those beyond their prior experience.

Clinical expertise: Physical therapists, orthotists and prosthetists, physiatrists, and other rehabilitation clinicians working with aging, gait disorders, and neurological conditions.
Disability expertise: Disabled people, assistive technology users, disability justice scholars, and advocates whose knowledge can shape the questions we ask and the technologies we pursue.
Design expertise: Product and interaction designers, and human factors researchers focused on how devices are understood, used, and incorporated into daily life.
Engineering and computational expertise: Researchers in biomechanics, robotics, control systems, simulation, machine learning, and related areas interested in understanding human movement or developing adaptive assistive technologies.
